Energy Theft on the Rise

A recent BBC article sheds light on the alarming increase in energy theft and meter tampering.

Reports to Crimestoppers have surged by nearly 50%, but an estimated 250,000 cases go unreported each year. This hidden issue is driven by desperation and the cost-of-living crisis.

Energy theft is not just illegal; it’s extremely dangerous, leading to gas leaks and causing severe injuries or fatalities. Stay Energy Safe reports that such incidents harm or kill 280 people annually.

Families pushed into fuel poverty, like mum-of-four Sam Holland, face tough choices daily. National Energy Action now estimates 5.6 million households are in fuel poverty, up from four million before the energy crisis.

At UKRPA, we are committed to raising awareness and combating energy theft and our members are on the front line working to protect us all.
